The public health service in Ireland is currently administered by 7 health boards and the Eastern Regional Health Authority, which, in turn, is sub-divided into three boards. Acute hospital services are provided by health board and voluntary hospitals. The health board hospitals are managed by the health boards while voluntary hospitals are owned and operated by religious orders or incorporated by charter and work under lay boards of governors.
