The Consultative Forum on Health Insurance
The Consultative Forum on Health Insurance met on 21st February 2012 and had a very useful discussion. The Forum received a briefing from Department officials on the Risk Equalisation Scheme that will apply from next January, and from the Chief Executive of the Health Insurance Authority on aspects of the interim RE scheme that is in operation for the current year.
The Forum discussed a number of ideas for achieving cost savings and for reducing the cost of health insurance overall. The Forum was of course careful to have regard to competition law which prohibits anti-competitive agreements such as any attempt at price fixing or restriction of trade. The focus was on generating ideas which would help address health insurance costs.
It was agreed that the Department of Health will meet individually with the three health insurers in the coming weeks, and that the results of these discussions would then be drawn together for consideration by the Forum.
