Tánaiste Seeks Nominations to the Post Graduate Medical and Dental Board
The Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, TD, today sought nominations to the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board.
The Tánaiste stated that she has decided to re-appoint the Board, in order to provide for the smooth transition of functions relating to postgraduate medical and dental education and training from the Board to the Health Service Executive (HSE) or other agency where deemed appropriate as per the Government Decision of 12th June, 2003.
The term of office of the last Board expired in 2002. At that time, the previous Minister for Health and Children decided not to appoint a new Board until decisions on future structures had been finalised. A new Medical Practitioners Bill is currently being drafted. In line with the recommendations of the Report on Audit of Structures and Functions in the Health System (Prospectus Report) regarding streamlining of agencies, the new Bill will provide for the abolition of the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board. Therefore, the newly appointed Board will hold office until such time as its functions are transferred to other agencies in line with the provisions of the Medical Practitioners Bill.
The Tánaiste said “in addition to the existing functions to be performed by the Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board, I will also request the Board to provide assistance, advice and expertise, where appropriate, to the Health Service Executive in order to facilitate the streamlining of the Board’s functions into the HSE or other agency where deemed appropriate. The Postgraduate Medical and Dental Board’s role in this regard will focus specifically on assisting the HSE to develop its interim structures for the future monitoring, co-ordination, development and funding of postgraduate medical and dental education and training.”
Letters have issued today to the relevant agencies inviting nominations which should be forwarded to the Department of Health and Children by 23rd September at the latest.
