Tánaiste committed to finding solution to Medical Indemnity issue

Following a meeting today (Wednesday 2 February) with the IHCA, the Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, said she had reiterated her commitment to finding a solution to the medical indemnity issue that would not jeopardise her legal or negotiating strategy with the MDU.

She said lawyers for both sides will be meeting to discuss the commitment she had given in her letter of 28 October 2004 to the IHCA and the IMO following her attendance at the IHCA Annual Conference.

In that letter the Tánaiste gave a commitment nobody who has suffered from a medical mishap would be left without compensation and no consultant would be left without cover, in all reasonable circumstances and in accordance with the law.
