Statement regarding meeting between Minister for Health and Children and Parents for Justice
The Minister acknowledges the distress caused to parents arising from the disclosure of practices in relation to the retention of children’s organs and he expresses sympathy for the pain and suffering that has been caused.
The Minister referred to arrangements currently being put in place by the Faculty of Pathology to update practices in this area in the future.
The Department of Health and Children will work with the Parents for Justice in a sensitive fashion so that within an agreed framework we can deal with their concerns. Every effort will be made to provide full information to individual parents in relation to particular concerns, including a counselling service where requested. A further meeting is planned for next week.
The Minister will maintain contact with the Parents for Justice to ensure that this issue is dealt with in a speedy and sensitive manner.
