Statement Of Minister Harney On Hiqa Report On Recommendations For Unique Health Identifier
The Minister for Health and Children , Mary Harney . T.D said the Health Information and Quality Authority Report on Recommendations for a Unique Health Identifier published today (Monday 29th June, 2009) will make an important contribution to work currently underway on setting policy for an individual health identifier for the health services.
This work is being done in the context of the preparation of the Health Information Bill which will provide the legislative basis for the individual health identifier. Arising from an extensive public consultation process on the Health Information Bill, the Minister has decided to set up an inter-agency working group to do further detailed work on this complex issue. The working group will be chaired by the Department and will include representatives of the Departments of Finance, Social and Family Affairs, Education and Science as well as the HSE and HIQA.
Details of the consultation process on the Health Information Bill are available on the Departments website. The Heads of Bill were approved for drafting by Government earlier this month. The conclusions of the working group will feed into the preparation of the Bill.
