Statement from Ministers Varadkar and Lynch
Minister for Health Leo Varadkar and Minister for Primary Care Kathleen Lynch had a very positive and useful meeting with the Irish Medical Organisation yesterday regarding General Practice issues. The Ministers reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to the negotiation of a comprehensive new GP contract with the IMO. The inclusion of Chronic Disease Management in the contract is a priority for the Ministers as well as for the IMO.
The Ministers also confirmed that the extension of universal GP care to all children aged 6 to 11 will be subject to negotiation in relation to the scope of service to be provided and the fee arrangements to apply, and will be implemented in the context of overall new arrangements and not as a standalone extension or amendment to the current contract. This is in line with the Ministers’ Budget Statement on 13th October.
Negotiations on a comprehensive new GP Contract between the Department of Health, the HSE and the IMO are continuing and all parties are committed to a successful outcome.
