Statement from Micheál Martin TD. Minister for Health and Children following his meeting with representatives of Patient Focus
Micheál Martin T.D. Minister for Health and Children today (September 23rd) met with representatives of Patient Focus in the Department of Health and Children.
Commenting after the meeting, the Minister reiterated his shock at the findings of the Medical Council´s investigation into complaints against Dr. Michael Neary, former Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, “the report was a dreadful indictment of the treatment of the women concerned who have been both physically and emotionally scarred”.
Commenting further, the Minister said that he listened carefully to the views expressed by the group and said that it is clear that a further inquiry is required into a number of wider issues, e.g. how such practices were allowed continue for such a long period of time at the hospital. The Minister discussed with the group, the various formats and options that could be pursued in terms of an inquiry.
The Minister is now considering a number of options in relation to this issue and will be bringing a detailed submission to Government in the next number of weeks.
The Minister and Patient Focus have agreed to meet again in three weeks time.
