Statement From Micheál Martin TD, following his meeting with Parents For Justice
The Minister for Health and Children, Micheál Martin TD today met with representatives of Parents For Justice. The Minister informed the group that he has met with Anne Dunne SC, Chairperson of the Post Mortem Inquiry and she has informed him that she will be in a position to provide a report to him on the removal, retention and storage of organs in all paediatric hospitals in 12 months.
In the light of his discussions with the Chairperson, the Minister is of the view that the Inquiry as established should continue. The Inquiry has already considered in excess of 150,000 pages of documentation submitted by participants. The Team has had contact with government departments and state agencies. It continues to conduct research, including site visits to hospitals and has been in contact with pharmaceuticals companies. It has also received assistance from Coroners. The Minister does not propose at this stage to establish a statutory inquiry.
