Statement from DoHC on the MDU
The Minister for Health and Children Micheál Martin TD today condemned the Medical Defence Union (MDU) for abandoning their responsibilities to Irish obstetricians by refusing to cover a number of claims made against them. Minister Martin is urging the Board of the MDU to reverse this decision.
“Once again I am asking the MDU to complete the very basic due diligence exercise, which is the minimum required from a public accountability perspective. I am accountable to Dáil Eireann for the spending of taxpayers money and I cannot expose the Irish taxpayer to claims of up to €400 million, particularly when the MDU took subscriptions from Irish doctors (which the Government then refunded to the doctors) for the last 25 years. The Irish Government has been making every effort to resolve this issue.”, Minister Martin said.
