Statement by the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly in the wake of meeting a cross party delegation of Oireachtas members from the Sligo area.
Following today’s (23rd June 2011) cross party meeting with representatives from the Sligo area I wish, for the sake of clarity, to confirm that while there are no immediate plans for the return of breast cancer surgery to Sligo General Hospital the matter remains under review.
Meanwhile I am very pleased to announce that Sligo General Hospital will be a screening centre for colon cancer with full colonoscopy services. I can confirm that two radiographers will be appointed later this year which will allow for the resumption of mammography at the hospital.
To further strengthen cancers services at Sligo General I wish to conform a second permanent oncologist will be appointed as well.
