Statement by the Minister for Health and Children
The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney , TD said today (23rd November, 2007) that she had arranged with the HSE that as many of the 97 women as can be contacted by the HSE, will be offered their clinical review tomorrow by Professor Arnie Hill , Consultant Breast Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital, Mr Mike Allen and Mr Enda McDermott, who offered to conduct these clinical reviews through the Minister, and to travel to Portlaoise to do this. In respect of women who cannot be contacted, a further service will be available on Monday.
The Minister said she was very grateful to the three Consultants for this offer and hopes that as many women as possible will be seen tomorrow. She said they will be available for consultation for as long as necessary. Arrangements are in place to ensure that any woman who requires further evaluation will have that provided. Dr Ann O’Doherty has offered to carry out this at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, on Monday afternoon, and, if necessary, on Tuesday afternoon. The Minister said she hopes this will bring speedy reassurance to all of the women involved.
The Minister has also instructed her officials to meet with the HSE tomorrow and Sunday afternoon to monitor progress on these arrangements
