Statement by the Department of Health and Children following the meeting of the SARS Expert Group
The Expert Group on SARS held its routine meeting today at the Department of Health and Children.
A number of issues, which are the subject of constant review, were discussed by the Group including the current epidemiology of the infection; the latest WHO figures in relation to the international incidences of the SARS virus; aspects of the hospital management of SARS and contingency planning in relation to SARS. A number of technical matters in relation to infection control; case management and pathology were also discussed.
The Group reviewed the travel advisory and, in relation to how it applies to China, amended it to reflect the current WHO list of areas of recent local transmission.
The Group discussed the most recent developments in relation to the Special Olympics. The Taiwanese authorities forwarded a proposal today to the Department of Health and Children which takes into account the advice of the Expert Group. The Department of Health and Children is currently discussing this proposal with the Taiwanese authorities.
