Statement by Tánaiste on first lung transplant operation performed at the Mater Hospital
The Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children , Mary Harney TD said today (12 may 05) that she was pleased to learn that the first lung transplant to be performed at the Lung Transplant Unit at the Mater Hospital was completed in the early hours of this morning. The Tánaiste understands that the patient is stable and doing well at this time.
The Tánaiste said : “I know that this first lung transplant operation represents a huge achievement by the many people who have worked so hard over the last few years to develop the Lung Transplant Programme. I congratulate all of those involved, and I wish the patient well. Naturally, I would ask that the privacy of the patient be respected at this time.”
“The first lung transplant is a significant milestone for the hospital which also performed the first heart transplant in 1985.”
