Minister Harney Welcomes Quinn Group Decision
The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, T.D., today (Thursday, 22nd February 2007) welcomed the confirmation by the Quinn Group that it is going ahead with the takeover of BUPA Ireland and staying in the market. The Minister said the Government is determined to achieve a competitive health insurance market. The Government believes there is significant potential for reform of the market and will be addressing this on the basis of reports it has received from the Competition Authority, the Health Insurance Authority, as well as the forthcoming Market Review Group, chaired by Mr Colm Barrington.
She said the Quinn Group is a significant player in the general insurance market and she was confident that they could play a similar role in sustaining competition in the health insurance market.
The Minister said “I will continue to pursue the Government’s policies of supporting a community rated market and fair competition. It is important that health insurance remains affordable to older people and those with illnesses, and also that consumers benefit to the greatest degree possible from competition and innovation in the market.”
