Statement by Minister for Children, Brian Lenihan TD following a meeting with Archbishop Brady
Minister of State Brian Lenihan TD today (Wednesday, 30th November 2005) met with Archbishop Sean Brady, Bishop Eamon Walsh, Bishop Colm O’Reilly and other Church representatives to discuss the recommendations of the Ferns Report. The meeting provided an opportunity for the Archbishop to brief the Minister on the Church’s response and in particular the timescale for introducing their new child protection guidelines “Our Children, Our Church”.
The Minister briefed the Archbishop on the plans by the HSE to establish inter-agency review groups within each Diocese in the State. The inter-agency review group aims to provide greater protection for children and will include representatives of the HSE, Gardai and Church. The groups will be convened by the HSE. The Minister also referred to the arrangements for monitoring child protection procedures and implementation of the Ferns recommendations linked to the Dublin Inquiry.
Archbishop Brady confirmed the full co-operation of the Church with the inter agency review groups.
