Statement by An Tánaiste regarding the Health Services Executive (HSE) Chief Executive Officer post
The Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children Mary Harney T.D. said today (02 June 05)
“I have learned with disappointment that Professor Brendan Drumm will not now be taking up the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Health Services Executive.
“Professor Drumm was an outstanding candidate for this position. However the Chairman of the HSE has stated that it is not possible for them to enter into certain long term commitments relating to the period after Professor Drumm’s proposed contract term.
“Notwithstanding the importance of the role of the CEO of the HSE, all public bodies are governed by limits on the financial commitments that they can enter into, regarding posts, remuneration and pensions.
“The terms on offer to Professor Drumm, within these limits, were unprecedented in the Irish Public Service. It is unfortunate that they were not acceptable to him, despite extensive efforts by the HSE in this regard.
“The Health Services Executive is making progress in putting in place a permanent management team. I have been assured that the recruitment committee of the Board will give urgent attention to filling the post of CEO.
“The day-to-day work of the health services is continuing, despite these developments.
