Statement by An Tánaiste, Mary Harney TD, Regarding the Dunne Inquiry Into Organ Retention
The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney, TD yesterday received a report and supporting documentation from the Inquiry established to examine issues around organ retention practices, headed by Ms Anne Dunne. Ms Dunne’s work has now officially ended as of March 31st.
The material received is substantial and amounts to 54 bankers boxes of documents. 3 of the boxes relate to the report itself and the remainder includes appendices and other documentation.
The main focus of the report is on the country’s main paediatric hospitals – Crumlin Hospital , Temple Street Hospital and the Adelaide and Meath, incorporating the National Children’s Hospital, Harcourt Street.
It will take some considerable time to examine this report in detail. It is the Minister’s intention to publish the report, subject to legal advice. However the immediate focus at this time is on the examination of all of the received material and consultations with the Attorney General. The report will then be brought to Cabinet for consideration.
The Minister has also committed to meet with the relevant groups affected by organ retention practices, before any further public actions occur.
It would be inappropriate to make any public statement regarding the report or its findings, until such time as the above procedures have been followed.
