Statement by An Tánaiste – Approval of Capital Programme of HSE

“I am pleased to announce that today I have written to the Health Service Executive to give my approval to allow it to progress its capital programme in 2005.”

“The HSE’s capital programme totals €564 million this year. It covers projects of all sizes throughout our health services, in every part of the country. These project will each make a significant and visible contribution to improved patient services.”

“This is a high level of health capital investment, and it will be sustained as part of the government’s €3.3 billion capital investment framework for health over 2005-09.”

“Our overall health capital budget this year is about €146 per person. This is nearly 60 per cent higher than the UK, for example, which will invest about €92 per person.”

“The five year capital investment framework includes €275m PPP funding. I am determined to make best use of this for national needs and to encourage further innovation and complementary roles for private finance in delivering health services in the country.”

“I am determined also to ensure that capital funding is used most efficiently for better patient services. For that reason, I will continue to work with the Health Service Executive to ensure that accurate and cost-effective current funding requirements for capital projects is identified early for each project. In this way, we will ensure that when capital works are completed, patient services can follow as quickly as humanly possible”

“I look forward now to the speedy implementation of each capital project identified in the HSE’s capital plan.”
