Reminder – Have your Say on the National Review of Specialist Cardiac Services
A public consultation by the Department of Health on behalf of the National Review of Specialist Cardiac Services is currently underway. The deadline for the submission of responses is 1 p.m. on Friday 17th August. The link to complete the consultation questionnaire is available at https://health.gov.ie/consultations/
Responses to the consultation will help the Steering Group in making appropriate recommendations for the national configuration of specialist cardiac services so as to achieve optimal patient outcomes at population level with particular emphasis on the safety, quality and sustainability of the services that adult cardiac patients receive.
The Department of Health would like to thank everyone who has completed the survey to date and to remind people that double entries will not be analysed during the evaluation of the consultation data.
Minister for Health Simon Harris said “From the outset, patients and their families have been considered as key stakeholders in the review process, with patient representatives sitting on the Steering Group as members. This public consultation demonstrates inclusivity of patient contribution into policy decision making and I hope everyone who wishes to will take the opportunity to have their say.”
Professor Philip Nolan, Chair of Steering Group for the National Review of Specialist Cardiac Services, said “This public consultation is an important element of the National Review. It will help our Group to make decisions about what we recommend as a blueprint for future services. We look forward to incorporating the views of our citizens into that picture, as well as using the best available evidence and international expertise to provide the Minister with a plan for the next ten to fifteen years.”
Notes to the Editor
The Minister for Health established the National Review of Specialist Cardiac Services under the independent chairpersonship of Professor Philip Nolan. The aim of the National Review is to achieve optimal patient outcomes at population level with particular emphasis on the safety, quality and sustainability of the services that patients receive by establishing the need for an optimal configuration of a national adult cardiac service.
Professor Philip Nolan has been President of Maynooth University for the past 6 years. He is currently President of the Irish Universities Association (IUA) and Chair of the IUA’s Task Group on Reform of University Selection and Entry. Professor Philip Nolan’s academic career, which includes a PhD and various scientific research and academic teaching accolades, point to a strong commitment to methodological rigour in generating evidence. This followed a primary degree in Physiology in 1988 and the medical degrees of MB BCh BAO in 1991 from University College Dublin (UCD). Professor Nolan then spent a short time in medical practice so understands the health service and the need to use and apply data and evidence to optimise patient outcomes. In 1996 Professor Nolan joined the staff of University College Dublin, where he led the development of UCD’s Health Sciences Centre and was Director of the UCD Conway Institute from 2003-2004. Professor Nolan was appointed Registrar and Deputy President of UCD in 2004, until his appointment to Maynooth.
The Steering Group consists of patients, relevant health professionals, senior HSE management and senior departmental officials. Collectively, the Group has expertise in clinical provision, service management, service policy, clinical effectiveness and patient safety, public health and patient experience.
