Opening of the Catholic Healthcare Commission’s sixth annual seminar by Mr. Brian Lenihan TD
Minister of State for Health and Children, Mr. Brian Lenihan, today opened the Catholic Healthcare Commission’s sixth annual seminar entitled “Wisdom of the Years as a Resource to Ireland in the 21st Century”.
The Minister said that
“Government policy, in relation to the development and delivery of services for older people is:
- to maintain them in dignity and independence at home for as long as possible in accordance with their wishes;
- to restore to independence at home those older people who become ill or dependent;
- to encourage and support the care of older people in their own community by family, neighbours and voluntary bodies
- to provide a high quality of hospital and residential care for older people when they can no longer be maintained in dignity and independence at home.”
The Minister emphasised the importance of participation of older people in general society, adding that such participation is both life-enhancing and health promoting, and is crucial to one’s sense of connectedness with community and wider society.
Mr. Lenihan concluded by congratulating the organisers of the seminar and he said he hoped that the speakers would generate interesting and relevant discussions.
