Mr Ivor Callely, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children today (Friday, 23 May) opened the 7th Annual Conference of Entrust – Irish Clinical Nurse Managers Association at the Tullamore Court Hotel, Tullamore, Co Offaly.
In his opening address, the Minister said that clinical nurse managers have a critical role to play in the development of nursing services and the health service generally. “As clinical nurse managers, you play a significant role in passing on to colleagues the knowledge and skills that will help the healthcare sector face the challenge of working in an ever-changing environment”, he said.
Minister Callely emphasised the need for nurse managers to play an active role in the management of healthcare through taking on board the actions outlined in the Action Plan for People Management and through the empowerment of nurses. “I have a vision of your pivotal role in an enhanced health service”, said Minister Callely.
“In recognising the need for nursing and midwifery managers to become more involved in the wider management issues confronting the health service, the Empowerment of Nurses and Midwives Steering Group was set up. The agenda is to involve nurses and midwives at all levels in a meaningful way by empowering and giving them a voice in the operational management of their healthcare institutions” the Minister said.
