National Quality Standards for Residential Services for People with Disabilities

Ms Kathleen Lynch T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for disability services, said today (Thursday 16th June 2011) that she has begun discussions with the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) to progress the commitment in the Programme for Government to put the National Quality Standards for Residential Services for People with Disabilities on a statutory footing and ensure that services are inspected by HIQA.

The Minister said that ‘this Government is committed to safeguarding and protecting vulnerable people with disabilities in residential services, and ensuring that their quality of life is enhanced. The HIQA standards clearly set out what a quality, safe residential service for people with disabilities should be and support the delivery of person-centred care in this sector.’
