Minister Seán Power opens Care Alliance Conference
Minister Seán Power, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, opened the annual Care Alliance Ireland Conference today.
The Minister praised the work and dedication of carers and he spoke of “…the invaluable role played by carers in the support and maintenance of dependent relatives or friends, be they older people, those with disabilities or people who are chronically or terminally ill.”
The Minister stated that the Government recognises the important role Carers have in facilitating people to remain at home where possible in accordance with their wishes. The Minister went on to say that “Additional funding for services for older people amounting to €150 million has been allocated in the 2006 Budget. This is the largest ever increase in funding for services for older people. These initiatives set out the Government’s continued commitment to older people”.
The Minister outlined details of Home Care Packages announced in Budget 2006. He said that the packages will be as flexible as possible and highly responsive to the real needs of the individual so that where a family or friends of an older person wish to provide these services, they will be encouraged to do so, with support, and linking in with the HSE, voluntary or private sectors.
Minister Power concluded by congratulating the carers on their dedication to providing care and support to their family members, friends and the wider community.
