Minister O´Malley launches Prevnet Conference of Telematics in Addiction Prevention
Mr. Tim O´Malley, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children today launched the second Prevnet Conference of Telematics in Addiction Prevention.
The aim of the conference, which is being held in Killashee Country House, Naas, is to increase awareness in the European Community of the opportunities that exist for prevention of drug use using new technologies such as the internet and mobile phones.
Opening the Conference, Minister O´Malley paid tribute to the professionals who work to discover new and innovative ways of communicating and providing information on drugs related issues.
“In terms of prevention the overall aim of the current range of activities and interventions in Ireland is to provide supportive environments in which the population as a whole can gain information, explore attitudes and develop skills to deal with the issue of drugs as it emerges in their lives. Within this context the use of telematics as a supportive mechanism for accessing and working with the population has much potential” the Minister said.
The Minister also stated “that while the evidence shows that communication and holistic education programmes should remain the core focus, there is also an emerging need to discover new and innovative ways of communicating and providing information.”
