The Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children with special responsibility for Disability, Mental Health Services and Food Safety, Mr. Tim O´Malley, T.D today (16th April 2004) addressed the 43rd AGM of NAMHI.
NAMHI is a representative body in the area of intellectual disability which receives an annual grant towards its revenue costs from the Department of Health and Children (€345,000 in 2004).
The Minister spoke about the Health Reform Programme and its implementation to date and the Strategic Review of Disability Services which is currently under way. The Review will look at a number of specific areas of service provision, including assessment and early intervention services, links between education and health related support services, mainstreaming, disabilities and older people and supported living and personal assistance.
The Minister said that while substantial progress has been made in recent years as a result of the very significant revenue and capital investment made in these services, he remains committed to the continued enhancement of quality support services for people with disabilities over the coming years.
