Minister O´Malley addresses meeting of Advisory Forum of the European Food Safety Authority
Mr Tim O´Malley T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, today, (13 February, 2004) addressed a meeting of the Advisory Forum of the European Food Safety Authority in Dublin Castle.
This was the first Advisory Forum meeting to be held in Ireland and the Minister welcomed its members to Dublin.
“Food safety is primarily concerned with the protection of public health and consumer interest” stated the Minister.
Referring to recent concerns (including dioxins in salmon) the Minister stated that we must learn to deal more effectively with these situations and we must improve our ability to anticipate developments and to react quickly when issues arise.
The Minister also stated that the public must have confidence in the food safety authorities and also that the European Food Safety Authority and its Advisory Forum had a vital role to play in protecting European consumers.
“I am very pleased that next month Dublin will host the first meeting of the Management Board of the European Food Safety Authority to be held outside of Brussels” concluded Minister O´Malley.
