Minister of State Power Welcomes Announcement of French Ban on Smoking in Public Places
Mr Sean Power TD, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, today (Friday, 17 November 2006) welcomed the announcement by the French Health Minister, Mr Xavier Bertrand, of the introduction of a ban on smoking in workplaces and public places in France. Minister of Sate Power said ‘I am very pleased that France has joined a number of other European countries in bringing in measures to deal effectively with the risk to public health that exposure to second hand tobacco smoke involves.’
The Minister of State added ‘I met Mr Yves Bur, a Vice President of the French National Assembly, in Dublin in early 2005 when he visited with a group of his Parliamentary colleagues and representatives of the French hospitality sector and I think they were impressed with the success of the measure in Ireland. I am confident that the French measure will be equally successful and, in a relatively short period of time, will be popular both with smokers and non-smokers’.
The French ban on smoking in public places will be introduced with effect from 1 February 2007 – except in the hospitality sector where the commencement date will be 1 January 2008.
