Minister Moffatt announces initiative on the provision of transport for older people attending day care centres
The Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Dr Tom Moffatt, today (24 November 2000) announced that he is providing an additional sum of approximately £600,000 to be allocated to health boards and the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) for the provision of transport for older people to facilitate their attendance at day care centres and out-patient clinics.
“Day care centres provide support and social contact for older people and also assistance and relief for those caring for older relatives. However, the lack of transport, particularly in rural areas, can adversely affect the older persons ability to attend a day centre or clinic,” the Minister said.
Minister Moffatt went on to say that he was therefore pleased to be able to provide financial assistance to health boards/ERHA to help to overcome difficulties being experienced by older people in travelling to day centres and out-patient clinics.
