Minister meets Public Representatives from Waterford on Radiotherapy Services

The Minister for Health and Children, Mr Micheál Martin, T.D., this morning (18 June 2003) met a delegation from Waterford City and County Councils and outlined to them the principles which inform the Expert Working Group´s deliberations and the priorities for the development of Radiation Oncology Services.

It is anticipated that the Report of the Expert Working Group will be considered by Government within the next eight weeks or so, after which it will be published.

The Minister emphasised the developments that have taken in place in cancer services nationally and in particular in the South Eastern Health Board area. Since 1997, a cumulative additional sum of approximately €30 million has been allocated to the South Eastern Health Board for the development of cancer services. This has enabled the approval of an additional ten Consultant posts in key areas, such as Medical Oncology, Surgery, Radiology and Haematology in the South East.

The Minister said that this level of investment is a clear indication of this Government´s continued commitment to the development of co-ordinated and patient focused cancer treatment.
