Minister Martin provides funding for purchase of St. Joseph’s Private Hospital by the ERHA
Mr. Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Health and Children, today (1 February, 2001) announced that he has given approval in principle to the Eastern Regional Health Authority to purchase St. Joseph’s Private Hospital in Raheny Dublin. The hospital and site recently came on the market. Additional funding under the National Development Plan is being allocated to the ERHA to fund the purchase, subject to the completion of the sale between the parties involved.
The Authority has indicated that a range of services are being considered for the site including the treatment of public patients who are on the waiting list, day case activity, day care services for older people and the development of a range of community services.
“The purchase of St. Joseph’s”, the Minister said, “will add to the range of services being provided in Dublin and will complement the services currently being provided by the Northern Area Health Board and other public health service providers on Dublin’s northside”.
The decision to purchase the facility was taken in the context of the Government’s continuing determination to address bed capacity deficits in the health service both in the acute and non-acute sectors. The Minister will be bringing a national assessment of bed capacity needs in both sectors to Government over the coming months.
