Minister Martin encourages all parents to have their children immunised against measles
Mr Micheál Martin T.D., Minister for Health and Children today, (4 June 2004) encouraged all parents to have their children immunised against measles, in view of the recent increase in the incidence of the disease in the Eastern Region Health Authority area.
Measles is a highly infectious and very serious disease. Approximately 1 in 15 children who contract measles will suffer serious complications.
The MMR vaccine protects against this disease and can now be administered to children from 12 months of age.
To avail of the MMR vaccine (which protects against Measles, Mumps and Rubella) parents should contact their General Practitioners or local Health Board.
