Minister Martin announces Major Development of Accident & Emergency Department at St. James´s Hospital
Mr Micheál Martin, TD, Minister for Health and Children, today (29 July, 2003), gave approval to St. James´s Hospital to award the contract for the reconstruction and expansion of its Accident & Emergency Department.
The works will extend the existing A&E Department to provide new resuscitation facilities, treatment cubicles and ancillary accommodation which will allow for the refurbishment of the existing A&E Department and provide for a new minor treatment area.
The reconstruction and expansion of the A&E Department will greatly improve existing services and will facilitate an enhanced quality of patient care.
The total cost of the project, including construction and equipping, will be of the order of €7million.
The Hospital has seen significant improvements to its infrastructure in recent years through its capital development programme. Recent examples of this include a major electrical infrastructure upgrade to facilitate the continuing development of the hospital complex as well as the Cancer Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory and the Acute Medical Admissions Unit which the Minister formally opened a number of weeks ago. The reconstruction and expansion of the A&E Department has been identified by the Hospital as a key immediate requirement in this regard.
