Minister Martin announces €5m for Purchase of Orthodontic Treatment
Mr Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Health and Children, today (27 June 2002) announced an initiative for the purchase of orthodontic treatment under the Treatment Purchase Fund. This new initiative will substantially increase the number of children in receipt of orthodontic treatment this year.
“Additional funding of €5 million from the Treatment Purchase Fund is being provided to health boards this year specifically for the purchase of orthodontic treatment. This funding will enable boards to provide both additional sessions for existing staff and purchase treatment from private specialist orthodontic practitioners. I am confident that these additional measures will further impact on waiting lists and waiting times,” said the Minister.
When fully on stream, these arrangements for the purchase of treatment – combines with the additional funding provided under last year’s orthodontic initiative and the structural changes now being introduced in the orthodontic service – should make it possible for a number of boards to reduce waiting times for treatment to one year.
In addition to extra training programmes being introduced, a new grade of Specialist in Orthodondics is being introduced into the service and the creation of a new grade of Orthodontic Therapist is being advanced. This will allow the achievement of greater caseloads.
