Minister Lenihan launches Family Welfare Conference Service Project
The Minister for Children, Mr. Brian Lenihan, T.D. today, May,19th, launched a Family Welfare Conference Service Project at the Boyne Valley Hotel, Drogheda. The Project was initiated by the North Eastern Health Board with the assistance of Barnardos.
The Minister said that this Government was committed to the furtherance of initiatives benefiting children and families. The Minister said “I am delighted to launch this project which will provide a system for supporting children and their families by maximising the use of children’s social and family support networks at a time of crisis in their lives”.
He pointed out that the functions of a family welfare conference are to make recommendations to a health board on the care and protection requirements of the child “The family welfare conference is one of the structures to ensure that children in need of special care or protection only go into special care units as a last resort and represents a major new approach for dealing with family crises”, the Minister said.
The Minister added that the project was “another significant step forward in ensuring that services are in place to allow Parts 2, 3 and 11 of the Children Act, 2001 to be implemented”.
