Minister launches First Steps Project
Mr Brian Lenihan T.D., Minister for Health and Children, today, 30th September 2002, launched a First Steps Project in Kilkenny. The Project will provide help and assistance to parents who require it following the birth of their child.
The Minister said that “the feeling of trepidation of looking after a newborn child can be particularly heightened for first time parents and for lone parents. Programmes such as this First Steps Project provide such wonderful support and guidance for parents”.
The Minister underlined the Government´s continuing commitment to the provision of optimum childcare facilities. “This commitment is without question and is unparalleled in the history of this State”, the Minister said. The Minister went on to say that additional funding of over €47M has been allocated by the Government this year for child welfare and protection services and that a high priority would continue to be attached to this area.
