Minister Launches All Island Mental Health Awareness Campaign. Devins “It’s ok to talk about mental health – Look after yourself – Look after your mental health”
Dr Jimmy Devins, T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children was speaking today (Tuesday 9th October, 2007) at the launch of the HSE National Office for Suicide Prevention’s mental health awareness campaign, ‘Your Mental Health.’
The objective of this campaign is to reduce stigma and dispel myths related to mental health and to promote positive attitudes and a greater understanding of mental health. The aim is to create a culture where people in psychological distress don’t hesitate to seek help and a culture that recognises the signs and signals of crisis and is willing to help.
The Minister welcomed the fact that this was an all island campaign and that the campaign is being simultaneously launched by Minister McGimpsey in Northern Ireland. He said “The whole of Ireland is working together in its efforts to improve awareness and understanding of mental health. The value of collaborating in the area of mental health cannot be underestimated. I am firmly committed to fostering and building on the existing levels of cooperation that exist with our counterparts in the North in the interests of promoting positive mental health”.
