Minister Ivor Callely on the publication of ‘Older People in Ireland: A Profile of Health Status, Lifestyle and Socio-Economic Factors from SLÁN’ by the National Council on Ageing and Older People
Minister Ivor Callely today welcomed the publication of ‘Older People in Ireland: A Profile of Health Status, Lifestyle and Socio-Economic Factors from SLÁN’ by the National Council on Ageing and Older People.
Speaking from West Cork, the Minister for Services for Older People congratulated Ms Eibhlin Byrne, Chairman of the Council, on the release of the Report. “This Report will contribute to the formation of better targeted health promotion policies for older people, and will be of great assistance to those working to provide the health and autonomy of our senior citizens.”
Minister Ivor Callely also said that we must now heed the findings of the Report. “It is important to take into account not just the health status and lifestyle of older people when planning long-term strategies for increasing life quality and expectancy, but also socio-economic factors which may help determine outcomes. If present patterns of adverse lifestyle adopted by some people persist into older age, particularly by those in the least socially advantaged groups, ill-health will become a significant burden especially in relation to obesity, diabetes, inactivity and the complications of chronic disease.”
Minister Callely also took this opportunity to wish all involved in the production of the Report, and all at the National Council on Ageing and Older People, the very continued success.
