Minister Hoctor launches the Carers Association National Conference for Family Carers
Máire Hoctor, TD, Minister for Older People today addressed the Carers Association National Conference for Family Carers. The focus of the conference was the health and wellbeing of Carers. It included presentations on the needs of carers and the affects of caring on carers health.
Speaking at the conference Minister Hoctor said “I am very much aware of the invaluable role played by carers and indeed of the many sacrifices they make. The Government is committed to supporting carers, and to ensuring they receive a comprehensive range of services to enable them to continue to care.”
The Government is very conscious of the important role of carers, particularly family carers, and is committed to continuing to support them in their role. The National Carers Strategy itself is being developed by an inter-Departmental working group, chaired by the Department of An Taoiseach with the secretariat provided by the Department of Social and Family Affairs. The Departments of Finance, Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Health and Children, the Health Services Executive (HSE) and FÁS are also represented on the group.
The strategy focuses on all informal and family carers in the community – not just those in receipt of a social welfare payment. Issues faced by people in paid employment, such as care assistants or home helps, are outside the scope of the strategy.
