Minister Helen McEntee welcomes the launch of Rebuilding Ireland – Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness
Helen McEntee TD, Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, today welcomed the launch of Rebuilding Ireland– Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness,by her colleague Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Housing, Planning Community and Local Government.
While acknowledging that the immediate priority is to house homeless families, Minister McEntee was pleased that the plan also addresses the particular housing needs of older people as well as people with mental health issues.
Minister McEntee commented, “Older people have consistently said that they want to stay in their own homes and communities for as long as possible and this Government is committed to facilitating this.”
The action plan acknowledges that there is a need for a range of housing choices and options for older people, who often have specific accommodation requirements such as being in close proximity to family and to social networks. Housing initiatives for older people encompassed in the plan include Dublin City Council’s sixty home development pilot project, which will start this year.
The Minister was also pleased to note that the action plan recognises the need for a cross-Departmental and cross-agency approach to address the complex needs of homeless people with mental health problems.
