Minister Harney welcomes National Quality Review of Symptomatic Breast Disease Services
Welcoming the HIQA report on Symptomatic Breast Disease Services today (25th February, 2010), Mary Harney TD, Minister for Health and Children said “this independent report demonstrates significant progress over the past two and a half years in the provision of services for women with breast cancer in the eight designated cancer centres”.
The report has examined each of the centres and concludes that each centre now has all the fundamentals in place for safe, quality care for patients, while recognising that in most centres there remain opportunities for improvement.
The HSE’s monthly Performance Reports show a noted improvement in compliance with the HIQA standards on waiting times for urgent and routine referrals up to December 2009.
In particular, Minister Harney welcomed the patient input into the report. “It is reassuring that the overwhelming message from patients was very high levels of satisfaction and confidence in the care they had experienced or were experiencing. This is a wonderful endorsement of the work being done by all the staff in the eight centres.”
