Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney TD, welcomes announcement of a deal between BUPA and Quinn Direct
I welcome today’s announcement of a deal between BUPA and Quinn direct. This will preserve jobs in Fermoy and competition in the market. It is good for workers and for policyholders.
I will continue to pursue the Government’s policies of supporting a community rated market and fair competition. It is important that health insurance remains affordable to older people and those with illnesses, and also that consumers benefit to the greatest degree possible from competition and innovation in the market.
BUPA brought competition to the market and that has been good for consumers. BUPA was a well managed company in Ireland, receiving approval and support from both employees and external sources. As I have said before, I do regret the decision of BUPA to leave, but I am pleased that competition and jobs are being preserved.
