Minister for Health and Children announces resignation of Chairman of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board

The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney T.D. has today (Thursday 7th October, 2010) announced the resignation of Mr Philip Lynch as Chairman of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board. Mr Lynch was appointed Chairman by the Minister in May 2007.

The Minister thanked Mr. Lynch for his contribution to the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board. “I want to genuinely thank Philip for his time and dedication in steering this project to where it is today” she said.

The Minister has appointed businessman, Mr. John Gallagher as the new Chairman of the National Paediataric Hospital Development Board. She said she looked forward to the Board under its Chairman, and the HSE moving forward to deliver a world class children’s hospital on the Mater campus.


The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) was established in May 2007 to plan, design, build, furnish and equip the new national children’s hospital. The new children’s hospital will play a central role in an integrated network of paediatric services across Ireland. This development will fundamentally change and improve the provision of paediatric healthcare in Ireland because merging the three existing hospitals (at Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght) into a single hospital structure will ensure a critical mass of specialised skills to provide highly complex treatment and care to sick children. The new children’s hospital will be located on Eccles Street with the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, which will provide additional benefits for sub-specialisation and the development of campus-wide support services.

There are thirteen members appointed to the Board, including representatives from Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street, the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght and two nominations from the Health Service Executive.

In discharging its functions, the Board has appointed a Chief Executive, a Medical Director and a Finance Officer. This executive team directly supports the Board in the execution of the project.
