Minister for Health and Children Announces End of Vaccine Trials Inquiry
The Minister for Health and Children, Mary Harney TD, announced today she has decided there should be no further examination of the question of vaccine trials involving babies and children in institutional settings in 1960/61, 1970 and 1973. The trials, which involved both children in institutional settings and within the family home, were the subject of a report by the Chief Medical Officer which was laid before the Oireachtas in November 2000.
The decision follows a detailed examination of judgements in court cases related to the vaccine trials heard in both the High and Supreme Courts.
The Minister has written to Judge Ryan to advise him of her decision and to thank the Vaccine Trials Division of the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse for its work in relation to this matter.
