Minister for Children launches Fingal Comhairle na nÓg
Give young people a voice in matters which affect their lives
Minister for State with Special Responsibility for Children, Mr Brian Lenihan TD, today launched the Fingal Comhairle na nÓg, organised by Fingal County Development Board.
“The first goal of the National Children’s Strategy is that children will have a voice in matters which affect them in accordance with their age and maturity” stated Minister Lenihan. “A central aspect of giving children a voice in the strategy is ensuring that children are provided with opportunities to participate in civic life” he continued. “As a means of giving children and young people a voice in national and local policy, the National Children´s Office (NCO) has, since 2001, spearheaded an annual Dáil na nÓg (Youth parliament)” he continued. “The representatives for Dáil na nÓg are selected at local level through Comhairle na nÓg (Children´s Councils), which are organised by County/City Development Boards (CDBs) throughout the country” added the Minister. The Minister paid tribute to Fingal CDB for the high priority being given to the views of young people and children through the hosting of Fingal Comhairle na nÓg.
“I would like to encourage all organisations, which work with children, both statutory and non-statutory, to build on the work of the CDBs and consult with children and young people on issues which affect their lives” concluded Mr Lenihan.
