Minister Callely welcomes initiative on long-stay beds

Minister of State with responsibility for older people, Ivor Callely T.D., today welcomed the announcement that funding of€5.5m is being made available in Dublin and Cork to place older people who have been deemed fit for discharge from acute hospitals in appropriate facilities.

The Minister said he was particularly happy that significant numbers of older people would benefit from this initiative and that it represented further evidence of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that our older people receive the care which they deserve.

He urged health boards to consider innovative approaches in planning how older people being discharged from acute hospitals would be accommodated and he suggested that they should, in particular, avail of opportunities to develop individually tailored packages of care.
