Minister Callely visits Royal Hospital Donnybrook
Today, Tuesday 4th November, 2003, Mr. Ivor Callely T.D., Minister for Services for Older People visited the Royal Hospital Donnybrook, to view first hand the ongoing renovations and improvements of the €10m redevelopment programme being undertaken at the hospital to their services to older people.
While it was formerly a facility for long-stay elderly patients only, it has more recently developed a wide range of services to benefit older people. With 200 beds, it has developed step down services for local hospitals which enables acute beds in those hospitals to be freed up.
Minister Callely said “As we all work to create a society for all ages, a fully inclusive society in which all citizens, irrespective of age, can enjoy fulfilling lives, I applaud all who are committed to improving the lives of older people.”
The hospital also runs a day hospital enabling people to come in for regular treatment while living at home. It is also developing an outreach service whereby health professionals from the hospital travel to the homes of older people to help them cope after hospital discharge.
