Minister Callely meets PALS at closing of Go for Life Forum
Mr. Ivor Callely T.D. Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children with special responsibility for services for older people, today (21 April 2004) attended the Age and Opportunity Go for Life PALs Forum in the ALSAA Sports Complex at Dublin Airport.
The Go for Life programme started by Age and Opportunity in 1994, promotes greater participation in sport and physical activity by older people.
The Minister congratulated the Go for Life PALS for their commitment and enthusiasm which has made the Go For Life programme so successful. “Today´s event is the first time that Age and Opportunity has organised an event specifically for PALs nationwide outside of the leader training workshops. The event marks their commitment to focus on supporting those whose voluntary work really makes the programme so successful” stated the Minister.
The Minister also stated that all the evidence to date proves that active participation is beneficial and does assure a good and enjoyable quality of life for older people.
With the services of specialist physical fitness professionals, Go for Life has a range of approaches – making presentations to active retirement and other groups of older people and making publications available which motivate people to take part in sport and physical activity.
