Minister Callely addresses An Bord Altranais´ National Conference “Enhancing Ethical Practice in Nursing and Midwifery Practice”
Mr Ivor Callely T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children today, (22 June 2004) addressed the National Conference of An Bord Altranais “Enhancing Ethical Practice in Nursing and Midwifery Practice” at the Tullamore Court Hotel, Tullamore.
In his opening address the Minister stated that “the objective of the conference is to provide a forum for all nurses and midwives to consider and discuss ethical issues in nursing and midwifery practice in Ireland. It is proposed to achieve this through the examination of ethical concepts, principles and research findings and these will be disseminated during the conference”.
The Minister also acknowledge that a conference of this caliber is not only important, but essential and provides an invaluable opportunity for nurses and midwives to discuss ethical issues in nursing and midwifery practice.
The Minister also stated that the ethics committee of An Bord Altranais is to be congratulated on taking a proactive step towards highlighting these issues and providing a forum to foster discussion.
The ethics committee is charged with
- identifying needs and developing evidence-based guidelines for ethical conduct and behaviour for professional standards
- monitoring and reviewing guidelines previously issued and
- considering issues presented to the Board for direction.
“I note with interest that your programme includes a variety of speakers reflecting the breadth of the ethical dimension of your practice and will provide for an interesting and stimulating day” stated the Minister.
