Minister appoints Chairperson for Board of Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA)
The Minister for Health and Children, Mr Micheál Martin TD, today announced the Chairperson of the new Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) – Mr Pat McGrath. A key policy aim of the Health Strategy is to deliver high quality services that are based on evidence-supported best practice. The Health Information and Quality Authority is being established to advance this aim.
“I am pleased to announce that I have appointed Pat McGrath to the position of Chairperson of HIQA. As Group Managing Director of the Project Management Group (PM) which employs over 1,100 people in Ireland, UK, Poland and other parts of Europe, Pat has extensive management experience and is excellently qualified for this role. This first step in the establishment of HIQA is a fundamental landmark in the plans the Government has put in train for the further development of a high quality, safe and effective health care system which will provide a better service for patients. It is intended that the nomination of persons to serve on the Board of the HIQA will be completed very shortly” Minister Martin said.
The responsibilities of the HIQA will be built around three related functions (i) developing health information; (ii) promoting and implementing quality assurance programmes nationally; and (iii) overseeing health technology assessment. The structure of the organisation will reflect these functions.
The new Health Bill currently being drafted to underpin the Health Service Reform Programme will include provision for the establishment of HIQA on a statutory basis.
Concluding, Minister Martin said “the establishment of HIQA as a key part of the architecture of planning and developing health and personal social services in Ireland will help to embed a continuous quality improvement ethos in our system.”
